Sutherland and poet Selma Mann present readings from their books accompanied by slides, including illustrations from Sutherland's books for children. The event touches on the mature adult’s and the child’s perspectives, confirming that both of these phases of life are radiantly imbued with the richness of curiosity and wonderment, inspiration and imagination, discovery and remembrance. Musings Young and Old includes audience Q&A, book sales and signings.

Mary Alice Sutherland is the author and illustrator of two books for children, A Hibernating Bear and a Holiday Hare, and Stories in Verses for the Child You Love.  

A native of Indiana, she was formerly an administrator at New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art, as well as at Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, and the University of California Humanities Research Institute.  She is the translator (under her former name, Mary S. Eigsti) of the Met Museum's publication, After Daguerre: Masterworks of French Photography (1848-1900) from the Bibliothèque Nationale.

Sutherland earned her BA at Indiana University, Bloomington, spent a postgraduate year at Strasbourg University, France, and earned her MA at the University of Bristol, England.  She now resides, writes, and paints in California.
