Mary Alice Sutherland is the author and illustrator of A Hibernating Bear and a Holiday Hare, and Stories in Verses for the Child You Love. Sutherland’s writings reflect her lifelong amusement in the exuberance of youngsters and her delight and fascination with the fanciful inventiveness and curiosity of young minds.
She is also the translator (under her married name, Mary S. Eigsti) of After Daguerre: Masterworks of French Photography (1848-1900) from the Bibliothèque Nationale, a publication of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
Before launching her career as a writer and illustrator, Sutherland was an administrator at two major New York City arts institutions and subsequently at a California humanities center. She earned her BA at Indiana University, Bloomington, spent a postgraduate year at Strasbourg University, France, and earned her MA at the University of Bristol, England. She currently resides in California.
